INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT TOTANA TOWN COUNCIL ON THE OCCASION OF MAY 17, International Day Against LGTBfobia
Totana City Council is absolutely committed to the defense of equality as a fundamental right and as a democratic value capital.
This is reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which enshrines equality between all people above any condition, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
And so it provides the Spanish Constitution in Article 14 enshrines the fundamental right of all people not to be discriminated against by "reason of birth, race, sex, religion, opinion or any other condition or personal or social circumstance."
Therefore, the City Council is working decisively in defense of Human Rights in the promotion of equality of all people and in preventing and combating all forms of discrimination, so that all people can fully exercise their enjoying rights and a true and full democratic citizenship.
Today, however, remain absolutely intolerable symptoms of discrimination, which require increased efforts in defending equality.
This is the case of homophobia and transphobia, two forms of discrimination that should have no place in any area of society, and that violate human rights and break the coexistence pillars that should underpin any democratic and pluralistic society, and must be guaranteed in any case by the authorities.
Although advances have been achieved, much remains to be done in the fight for the elimination of homophobia and transphobia.
On 17 May 1990 the General Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness, a fact that is now commemorated internationally, in recognition of a historic day in the struggle for dignity of this group.
But homophobia and transphobia remain some of the most widespread forms of hatred, and even still reflected in the criminal law of many countries.
In many parts of the world various acts of violence against persons occur because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
No human being should be subjected to violence, torture, stigmatization and suffer abuse.
It is therefore imperative to put an end to homophobic and transphobic violence, both physical and psychological.
It is also unacceptable that people are discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and that their rights are violated.
Aware of the need for further progress in this area, continue to take the necessary measures to ensure everyone the effective enjoyment of human rights, equal and non-discrimination and ensure prevention and protection against homophobia and transphobia, in defense of equality and dignity of people as superior to preserve in any society goods.
