Totana City Council today expresses its institutional support to all those brave and fighter women who battle breast cancer every day, and to all those who dedicate their lives to research for its cure.On World Breast Cancer Day, we join in raising awareness about the need for regular breast exams to detect any abnormalities in a woman's breasts.
Breast cancer accounts for 16% of all cancers in women.Since 1994, a breast cancer prevention program has operated in the Region of Murcia. This program is based on the periodic monitoring of this serious condition in women between the ages of 50 and 69 by means of biannual x-rays of the breasts (or mammograms).
This technique allows the diagnosis of cancer and treatment when it can still be cured, so the collaboration of women is essential. Every year the General Directorate of Public Health summons by letter to more than 2,000 women who, in that age range, are summoned to the mobile unit that is installed in Totana for a couple of weeks to perform these mammograms.Thanks to this program, it has been possible to verify how the survival of women diagnosed with breast cancer increased, being up to 95% when the diagnosis takes place in the first year of development This program is coordinated by the general direction of Public Health of the Ministry of Health and has the collaboration of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), the Health Center and the Totana City Council.
