The Department of Equality and Defense of Collective Rights LGTBI Totana City Council has repainted, finally, two steps of pedestrians with the six colors of the rainbow flag in the central square of the Constitution of this town coinciding next week with the celebration of the Week for Respect and Equality of the LGTBI Collective in this municipality.
Totana City Council has decided to paint two of the five steps originally planned, those located in the Plaza de la Constitución, and desist from the other three foreseen in the surrounding streets surrounding this urban space.
The first deputy mayor, Juan José Cánovas, wanted to see first-hand the work and the state of the signaling that has raised public controversy, especially in social networks, with which "it has allowed to open a sterile debate of a situation that is totally normalized, and that does not make any sense, since it has been done in other places in Spain ".
Canovas has defended this municipal action promoted by a Council that "was created for the first time in Totana at the beginning of this term" and has also reiterated that the action aims to "give visibility to the normalization of rights and claims LGTBI collective."
Similarly, he has lamented prejudices and the "homophobic attitude" of strangers smearing with white spray some of those already painted on the first day of work, which were accompanied by different banners with them with the slogan "No to the ideological imposition of gender, Totana indoctrinates ", with the recognizable emblem of the yoke and the arrows characteristic of the Spanish Falange.
The municipal workers have finished this morning the work of repainting with the rainbow flag in the two accesses, which will remain with these colors until the end of the month and the end of this commemorative awareness program, as announced by Juan José Cánovas.
In addition, each of the colored strips has been delimited, in both steps, with white headers on both sides that simulate lanes or cyclable roads to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians, as specified.
This signaling is temporary and will be repainted in white when the activities organized for that reason end.
