The socialist regional deputy Alfonso Martinez Baños has asked the Minister of Culture to give explanations in the Assembly about the lack of economic support from the regional government to the archaeological site of La Bastida, in Totana.
Martinez Baños has said that in the coming days he will meet with archaeologists from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), who say that in recent years the contribution of the regional government in the research and preservation has been zero.
The Socialist Parliamentary Group already requested the Murcian Executive, in a motion presented at the Assembly, to define a strategy for coordination, organization and financing, which would guarantee the full excavation of the site, research, musealization, and public functioning, in collaboration with the Government of Spain, the City Council of Totana and the UAB.
The Socialist deputy has indicated that it is an asset of Cultural Interest, whose extraordinary relevance has been hidden for a long time "under veils of ignorance, helplessness and abuse", despite the fact that La Bastida is known internationally for almost a century and a half .
He recalled that in 2013 the excavation of the site was stopped due to lack of economic resources, pending the consolidation of a part of the wall, discovered in the last phase of the excavation, which had to be financed with a contribution of 80,000 euros from the regional government , scheduled for 2014, "which, to date, has not occurred".
According to Martínez Baños, La Bastida is an international benchmark in the world of archeology, "so it is necessary to put it in value to also become a benchmark in the world of culture and tourism."
"We demand explanations from the councilor, it is urgent that the regional government make the necessary investments and guarantee the future of this Cultural Interest, because otherwise, it would be a loss of enormous historical value," he concluded.
