The Totana City Council has urged the Government of Spain to respect and comply with Law 21/2013 that establishes the exploitation rules of the Tajo-Segura Transfer, which were approved in October 2013 by the agreement of five Autonomous Communities, the irrigators and the Government of the Nation.This has been agreed, unanimously, in plenary agreement at the initiative of the Popular Group, in which the Government of the Nation is also asked to provide the documentation that justifies, in the current situation, the study commissioned to the Study Center and Public Works Experimentation (CEDEX) and the consequences it could have on the exploitation of the Tajo Segura Transfer.This organization provides multidisciplinary support in civil engineering, building and environmental technologies; and assists both public administrations and institutions as well as private companies.This is the most important hydrological infrastructure in Spain, since it brings solidarity and wealth to the whole of the country as a whole; and has an impact on the Spanish GDP of more than 2,500 million euros, generates 110,000 direct jobs and another 250,000 indirect.
In addition, it benefits 200,000 irrigated hectares and more than 44 million fruit trees.Today, thanks to this contribution of water, it is possible that almost three million people in the provinces of Albacete, Alicante, Murcia and Almerķa, can have, for 40 years, enough water resources to meet their domestic consumption.Such is its importance, that half of the water used in homes in the Southeast of Spain comes from the Tagus River; which shows that in the absence of this Transfer, there would be significant restrictions on the supply of the populations and even in the industrial fabric.
