CEIP DEITANA de Totana has participated in the School Scientific Congress on Agroecology and Food Sustainability with the research project: "Recovery of varieties and biocultural memory of the Sierra Espuña environment", held on May 21, 22 and 24, 2019.
In this congress we have been awarded the First Prize, whose amount will be used to continue researching and developing agroecology projects in our Ecological School Garden.
This congress has focused on the recovery of flavors and knowledge of the Historical Agrarian Territories of our region, organized by the University of Murcia, Ministry of Education and the Agroecology Network of the Region of Murcia.
Primary and Secondary educational centers of the whole Region of Murcia have participated, developing in several days:
Tuesday, May 21st: 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from the Deitania de Totana school, presented their research work through a power point in the auditorium of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Friday, May 24: various activities were developed, such as the exhibition of works, a product market and the exchange of seeds among the attending educational centers.
Our center held a demonstration of "Cocina en Directo" (Show Cooking) where some students made a Humus recipe using the chickpea from Sierra Espuña (local variety in danger of extinction and recovered in our school).
In addition, we exchanged with other centers, several seeds recovered through our Research Project (long bean, thick-pod présoles, pebbles and chickpeas from Sierra Espuña).
Then, a round table was held in which the Coordinator of the Ecological School Garden of the CEIP Deitana participated.
And, finally, the day ended with the awards ceremony and the closing ceremony that took place in the Assembly Hall of the Social Center of the University of Murcia in the Espinardo Campus.
