The Department of Social Welfare of the City of Totana will promote an awareness campaign to prevent excessive consumption of alcohol in youth for the upcoming festivities of Santa Eulalia and Christmas.
The mayor in charge of the area, Javier Baņos, and the municipal technician in prevention of drug addiction, Lucia Gallego, presented this initiative with the aim of raising awareness among young people by appealing to responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages during this holiday season.
Baņos recalled that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited for children under 18, stating that this is already known by the hoteliers of the municipality.
In addition, informed that, according to the latest statistical data of the Program of Prevention of Drug Addiction of the Health Education Plan in the School of the Ministries of Education and Health, the average age of beginning of alcohol consumption has been reduced to 13 years .
In this regard, he commented that 76.8% of adolescents have consumed alcohol in the last year and 35% of children of 14 years have made bottle as the most frequent form of alcohol consumption, of which a quarter They have ended in drunkenness.
Javier Baņos also pointed out that "with this we do not mean that we do not drink at parties, but we intend to appeal to a moderate and responsible consumption, because the problems are caused when alcohol is abused".
Advice before an ethyl coma or great drunkenness
The municipal technician offered a series of advice to young people on what to do in the face of an ethyl coma or a great drunkenness, such as never providing alcohol or medication;
try to reassure the person because he can be aggressive and prevent him from falling, since one of the risks is to suffer fractures and head injuries.
It is also advised if you find an unconscious person, keep your head on the side because you can vomit and a bad position can lead you to suck your own vomit coming to the bronchi and suffocate.
You should never abandon any person who presents the above mentioned problems, since it can suffer hypothermia (decrease in temperature, since alcohol produces peripheral blood vasodilation and heat loss), so that it must be sheltered;
and in any case, it is recommended to transfer it to a medical center or call the emergency services to attend it.
Finally, they recalled the offer of a free online course for parents and offered by the Ministry of Health for the prevention of alcohol consumption, whose information can be requested at the Municipal Social Services Center.
