The Municipal Government of the City of Totana advocates to restore the Institute for Women in the Region of Murcia, and provide sufficient resources for its operation after it was eliminated from the regional administration in 2010 in view of the needs to develop policies of equal opportunities according to contemporary social reality.
In fact, the totanero Consistory has urged the regional government, responding to a plenary mandate last March, to comply with what was approved in November 2015 within the regional Assembly.
The Institute of Women of the Region of Murcia was born under the protection of Law 12/2002, of December 3, as an autonomous body, administrative nature, attached to the Ministry responsible for women and endowed with legal personality, heritage own and full capacity to act for the fulfillment of its purposes.
After several years in operation, the regional government decided in 2010, under the presidency of Ramón Luis Valcárcel, to abolish it;
whose disappearance was harshly criticized by the political groups and groups that worked for Equality between men and women.
At the beginning of the current legislature, more specifically in November 2015, a motion was debated in the Autonomous Parliament -approved with the votes of the PSOE, Podemos and Ciudadanos, and against the PP- to request the inclusion of a specific item for the restitution of the Regional Institute for Women and necessary legislative changes, so that the direction of said body is chosen by the regional Assembly in order to guarantee its independence.
The Municipal Government of Totana understands that the social reality in this municipality and in the whole of the Region of Murcia demand, in terms of Equality policies, an evaluation and a new approach that addresses all the dimensions of the problem that the women face in their day to day.
