The City of Totana adheres today, June 5, to the actions collected on the World Environment Day, which is celebrated today, with the slogan "No contamination by plastic" with the aim of protecting our environment and reducing pollution of the oceans by the use of plastics.

The human being is at the same time the work and architect of the environment that surrounds him, which gives him material sustenance and gives him the opportunity to develop intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.

In the long and tortuous evolution of the human species on this planet has reached a stage in which, thanks to the rapid acceleration of science and technology, people have acquired the power to transform, in countless ways and on a scale unprecedented, how much it surrounds them.

The United Nations, aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a fundamental issue that affects the well-being of peoples and the economic development of the entire world, designated the 5th of June World Environment Day.

The celebration of this day gives us the opportunity to broaden the foundations of a well-informed public opinion and of the conduct of individuals, companies and communities inspired by the sense of their responsibility for the conservation and improvement of the medium.

This day has been gaining relevance since it began to be held in 1974 and, now, it is a worldwide platform for public outreach with wide repercussion around the globe.

Each year, World Environment Day is organized around a theme and serves to focus attention on a particular pressing issue.

This year's theme, No Pollution For Plastic, appeals to the population around the world in favor of a planet without contamination by plastics.

Each year 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans, threatening marine and human life, and destroying natural ecosystems.

The objective is to raise awareness about the need to reduce the amount of plastic that is poured into our oceans.

The celebration of this day aims to make us aware that we ourselves can change habits in our day to day to reduce the heavy burden of the contamination of plastics in our nature, in our wildlife and on our own health.

While it is true that plastic has many valuable uses, we rely too much on single-use or disposable plastic and that has serious environmental consequences.

Message from the Secretary General of the UN António Guterres

It is essential to have a healthy planet so that the future will be prosperous and peaceful.

We must all contribute to protect our only home.

But it may be difficult to know what to do or where to start.

That is why, on this World Environment Day, we have a single order.

Let's eliminate the contamination by plastics.

Our planet is flooded with harmful plastic waste.

Every year, more than 8 million tons of oil end up in the oceans.

There are more microplastics in the seas than there are stars in our galaxy.

From the remote islands to the Arctic, there is no place left intact.

If the current trend continues, by 2050 our oceans will have more plastic than fish.

The message of this World Environment Day is simple: reject disposable plastic.

If you can not reuse it, refuse it.

Together we can chart the path to a cleaner and greener planet.

Thank you.
