The City Council has asked the Ministry of the Environment and Presidency to expand the human and technical resources for the forest catchment of the municipality of Totana in order to be able to develop in optimal conditions the work of prevention of fires and threats that may occur in The environment of Sierra Espuña.

Councilor for the Environment, Agustin Gonzalo Martínez, recalls that Totana has a vast natural heritage that must be preserved and protected, highlighting areas such as the pine forests of La Santa and the regional park of Sierra Espuña;

And reiterates that an initiative has already been adopted months ago in this regard.

The drought that has been suffering for some years the Region of Murcia, as well as the considerable increase of the temperatures in the summer periods, causes that the current circumstances of the surroundings are compromised and significantly increases the possibilities of risk in our forest environments.

Therefore, and also taking into account the large area that must be protected and controlled, it is necessary an increase in personnel that is part of the forest checkpoints and that ensure the safety of our natural spaces, says the mayor.

At the moment, the brigade that counts on the municipality of Totana covers a period that excludes from approximately November to April, reason why it is necessary to increase the personal resources to be able to guarantee the security of the spaces during the twelve months of the year.

In addition, the Councilor for Environment, Public Safety and Civil Protection reiterates that there is also a need for a renewal of the technical resources with which the forest brigade Totana, in order to respond more effectively to any risk or threat.

At present, the only vehicle we have for this purpose is not in optimal conditions, since it is a tanker truck that was acquired two decades ago and whose water transport capacity in case of emergency is only 3,000 Liters, while the current tanks have capacities of up to 4,500 liters.

These measures will translate into greater efficiency in fire prevention and threats that may occur in the Sierra Espuña environment, in addition to avoiding the economic costs and the environmental and landscape impact that would imply not having the personal and technical means To respond quickly to an emergency.
