The population of the Region of Murcia demands agricultural strategies that promote food production, biodiversity and environments in which environmental activities can be developed.

This is a part of the conclusions of the study Economic valuation of the ecosystem services and services of agriculture â€, awarded at the Congress of Young Researchers held at the University of Almeria.

The communication, presented by PhD José Ãngel Zabala García, also shows that the inhabitants of the Autonomous Community demand measures to minimize the pollution that agriculture can cause in aquifers.

According to the study by Zabala, a native of El Paretón ( Totana ), the well-being of the population is linked to the consumption of water required by agricultural production in the Region.

The report, which is part of his doctoral thesis, shows that the inhabitants are willing to pay for the improvement of the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

The benefits allow redesigning current agricultural practices.

According to the conclusions, the population values the global contribution of agriculture to human well-being.

It also shows that citizens demand measures that minimize water consumption and pollution of aquifers in the Region of Murcia.

The study was conducted during the first semester of this year.

To do this, the doctoral student surveyed 358 households throughout the Region of Murcia, according to Totana.com UPCT sources.

The work has been directed by Francisco Alcón, from the Agricultural Economics area of the UPCT, and José Miguel Martínez Paz, professor of the Applied Economics area at the University of Murcia.

Zabala has a degree in Economics from the University of Murcia and a PhD student in the interuniversity program in Economic, Business and Legal Sciences.
