The Department of Equality and Women of the City of Totana offers a series of recommendations to promote education for gender equality in the family, especially in the summer dates in which all members live together and spend more hours together to consequence of the holiday context of parents and children.

In this sense, it is convenient that parents, who are the models of their sons and daughters, should avoid acting and following gender biases, since these are the example for childhood and adolescence, and thus favor that they do not reproduce These attitudes in their future relationships.

In addition, you have to be aware of how others are spoken, avoiding comments that reinforce gender stereotypes (“girls must be beautiful” or “boys must be strong”).

Language must also be used in a fair and inclusive manner, without it being used against anyone as a weapon of oppression or exclusion in society.

From the Department it is recommended to be on alert about the relationships that the sons and daughters have, and that these are egalitarian giving them tools to build healthy relationships (without abuse or control of any kind).

Children should be guided to choose extracurricular activities, sports, hobbies or studies based on their abilities and preferences, without taking into account social stereotypes linked to gender.

It is also suggested that parents reflect on how what surrounds the environment and social context is totally stereotyped, and realize that couple relationships cannot be based on the control of the other, but on mutual respect.

It is convenient that they be offered games or activities that develop their capabilities based on their preferences and that they be made to reflect on the fact that video games or comics are heavily influenced by gender stereotypes.

Likewise, they must be observed when they interact with their partners, as they will provide information on how they perceive and interpret gender roles;

and that they be made to understand that all people are equal and value them for how they are, regardless of gender or gender identity.

It is highly recommended that the different household chores be distributed equally among the whole family, preventing minors from associating the different tasks with a specific sex (housework, cleaning, cooking, care for the elderly and young people at women, and banks, workshops, repairs to men).

It is necessary to show the same attitude of demand with the different sexes, having to know how to perform all the tasks and to value them in the same way;

and those who express their emotions and feelings should be encouraged, without being influenced by prejudices: we are all vulnerable or strong depending on the circumstances.

Finally, it is recommended to keep these suggestions in mind about guidance on books, magazines, video games, movies or television programs that do not convey sexist stereotypes;

while encouraging the critical spirit, realizing the sexist stereotypes transmitted by the media and social networks and reflecting on the need to overcome them to live in equality.
